Hongkong and Macau in the 60s, and more

This nice documentary that I've seen via sf's blog 船山筆記 shows our old Hongkong and Macau in the 60s. I don't know where did the author get those images neither what he explains in the film (in Dutch?). Anyway, images show life and costumes of people, children, housing, some local industries at that time like fishing, farming, making plastic flowers, and producing firecrackers by hand in Macau etc ! Of course, street scenes are interesting parts of the film. There are also some important images like the Shek-kip-mei fire in 1953 (see wiki here)...

I have thus also discovered this Hongkong Database Page (香港誌) which is collecting little by little the history and culture development of Hongkong. Too bad it is only in Chinese for the moment.

From that Hongkong database, I've found another documentary (日治時的香港 1941-1945) showing some historical images of Hongkong fallen in the hands of Japan during the war. A period that Hongkong people call it "3-years and 8-months", between the 25th December 1941 and the 16th August 1945.

Please do not hesitate to let me know if you cannot find the word "welcome" in the language of your country there. I would have the pleasure to add them in.

My photo of the week: Manège / Merry-go-round

This wonderful antique Merry-go-round is absolutely ecology! it works by pedaling... yes, like riding bicycle... is called a "bicycle roundabout" (manège de vélos) , hope i don't translate it bad.

We saw this wonderful Merry-go-round in the Musée des Arts Forains which opens exceptionally to the public this weekend for The European Heritage Days, an event created since 1984 and taken place every 3rd weekend of september.

Paris est... (2)

This time, an american friend who has already been to Paris several time, has filled up the questionnaire for me :
Her word to describe Paris (question no. 16) : beautiful
And you ? how would you see Paris ?

【photo】'Hongkong bridges'

This is one of the seldom photos I have taken in Hongkong during our short trip in August 07. We arrived just before arrival of a returning-typhoon and it was raining almost every single day in Hongkong, and all day long. So, except visiting Ocean Park under the pour, seeing the Peak in a thick mist, we could almost do no tourist. To compensate, we rented discs and see films and films in those evenings ;) and I am so happy to have seen some films that I have discovered thru' blogs earlier and longed to see like "Paris, je t'aime" (2006) directed by more then twenty film makers including Coen brothers, Olivier Assayas, and Christopher Doyle etc... then a Hongkong film "Midnight fly (慌心假期)" (2001) by Jacob C L Cheung.

"Paris, je t'aime" is perhaps not the movie of the year. However I find it somehow a lovely idea to collect talent of directors to film Paris in different eyes. It gives a certain charm to the film and to the city. I like most of the segments and my favorites are perhaps "Tuileries" and "Porte de Choisy" which are full of craziness and creative ideas :D Trust me, you won't find crazy couple in the metro neither furious chinese woman in china town everyday :D

"Midnight fly" is a road movie in which a Hongkong known singer and actress Anita Yim-fong Mui (1963-2003) played the role of a desperate married woman. According to wiki's list of her filmography, it was one of her last film before she died. When I think about it, sometimes life can be turned out so unexpected, no matter in the film or in the reality, if we can call it fate.
