Thank you for sharing.

I tend to agree with the conclusion of Time magazine:

"... Hong Kong must continually raise its game to maintain its relevance to the burgeoning Chinese economy ..."

HK is at a cross-road because of competitions from Shanghai and other big cities in mainland China. Will HK re-invent itself? And, how?

Kempton:

Haricot: i actually first read it via Sherry's blog... yes, 'how' is a good question... but i'm sure that still Hk has competitive power...

Familiarity breeds contempt...

There is also a very famous academic paper called "A Tale of Two Cities" back in the 90s comparing Singapore and HK.

At that time HK and Singapore are very close in terms of their competitivenesses. Now, HK is probably ahead in almost any meaningful metric.

Here is the boring paper.

thanks for your link of the paper, will go and take a look ;)

周游: thanks !! i think i've seen that one too...

Thanks for the Time Magazine link.

All the talk about the big THREE - New York, London and Hong Kong....hmm...what about my tiny city of 1.2 million people, yike! May be we have to go back to farming someday :-) It's not just HK. Every city has to find its strength in order to survive future global competition. Even within the U.S, we are competing for federal, state and outside resources all the time. A big company in my town just decided to move its headquarter to Virginia, to be closer to Washington. How can any city afford to just sit around and wait for the good fortune to come your way nowadays?
